Parent/Spectator FAQs
Terms To Know:
Shooting Line: This is where the archers stand bows on toes, until whistle command to shoot. They shoot at 10 meters and 15 meters. Parents are never to approach these lines.
Waiting Line/ Area: This is where archers stand or sit while they wait for all archers to be done and wait for the next whistle command. Parents do not cross this area during tournaments.
Staging: Place where archers gather before their flight to meet up with the coaches. Coaches will give their arrows, score card and walk out as a team.
50: Archer shoots 5 arrows each round. If the archer gets all arrows in the center, worth 10, they score a perfect 50. During tournaments they will get a pin and acknowledgement for their success! At practice we will have a 50 sticker for them to collect.
Quiver: This is the tube looking thing that the arrows go in for the archers.
Arrival time: This is the time, 30 minutes before archers need to arrive at the tournament before they shoot.
Flight time: This is the time archers go on the range to shoot for their turn in the tournament.
Bale Number: This is the target your archer will shoot at and where you would sit at a tournament.
How do we register for tournaments?
Coaches are the only ones to register archers for tournaments. If you can't make it, you must tell the coach at least 2 weeks prior to the tournament. Each tournament has their own drop date, which means if anyone on the tournament roster after the drop date is responsible to still pay for that spot.
If you are interested in extra tournaments, please look for an announcement how the coaches will have you sign up.
How and when do we know flight times for tournament?
Typically, 5 days to 1 week prior to the tournament. It varies depending on how tournaments are set up by host schools/teams. Once a coach has those times they will be communicated to the team on Team App.
What if I can't make it to the tournament?
We understand illnesses happen. Please tell Coach Asap that you can't make it.
Each tournament has their own time frame that coaches have to follow. They have when registration starts, when drop date is so we don't get charged for a spot, when flight times are released, and when you can change flight times with other archers. Sometimes these dates are fast turn around and hard deadlines.
If you are after the drop date, and it's a tournament you are paying out of your own pocket, you will still have to pay the fee and not get a refund. Even if it's a tournament included in your team registration fee, the team still has to pay for that spot. Please plan accordingly.
In summary, communicate with coaches ASAP.
What if the flight time doesn't work for us?
Coaches register over 120 archers for each tournament. When we register for a tournament, 2 things can happen, all depending on what the host school decided. First, when it's time to register for the tournament, 1, possibly 2 coaches have to be at a computer, individually trying to get time spots for all of our archers. It's like black Friday shopping and you are trying to get the best deal. We are competing with other coaches from other teams, trying to get flight times for their archers all at the same time. It goes fast!
The second way is auto select. Coaches register archers for the tournament with preference time slots we want to get. On a specific day (determined by the host school), the computer will put every archer in a spot that is available, trying to honor the preference for each and every school. We get what we get.
With that, if you still can't do the flight time that was given, you will need to ask other archery parents if they can swap. You may do this on the Team App chat section, choose the parent group. YOU MUST TELL COACH OF THE SWAP, ONCE CONFIRMED WITH BOTH PARTIES, SO THE COACH CAN INFORM THE HOST OF TOURNAMENT.
What does it look like at tournaments?
Tournaments are similar to our practices, just on a bigger scale. The archers show up on the day of the tournament, look for our staging area. We get ready and walk out as a team about 10 min prior to flight time. Parents will be seated in chairs or bleachers behind the archers. Archers will follow whistle commands like practice. Once they are done then they will go back to the staging area. At this time they are welcome to leave. At the end of every tournament, unless the host changes it, we have an award ceremony. We try to sit as a team where they have awards. (Typically on the range, where they were shooting) when our team gets called the archers in that division can go up to stand on the podium. The end.
What are the divisions and Team 1 and 2 mean?
Divisions are as follows:
For Teams: Elementary: 4 and 5th graders
Middle School: 6,7,8th graders
High School: 9-12th graders
For Individuals: only separated into male and female
Team 1 and 2: NASP bullseye tournament system maximum archers on a team is 24, with a minimum of 12; 6 boys and 6 girls on a team. The system adds top 12 archers on that team for total score as a whole.
We have 2 teams because the number of archers we have in that division is more than the maximum on a team. So we split it up into 2. Individual Team means that we have extra but not enough to make another team for that division. They still get Individual scores, and they are still part of our team. Their scores just can't count towards a team score.
Where and what is staging?
This is the area we have the team meet at tournaments. Once you arrive to the host school you will follow signs to staging.
Staging is where archers check in with coaches. They get their arrows, score cards from the coaches, then we walk out to the range as a team. Parents are welcome to come back there too, but most areas are tight. Archers can leave their stuff there during their flight. We ask you to arrive 30 mins prior to your flight time to give time to find parking, staging etc.
Admission fee? Who can come and watch?
More schools are charging admission fees for spectators at archery tournaments. It varies in amount. We will try our best to inform you beforehand what it is. Be prepared, bring cash.
Anyone can come and watch the tournament. Bring the Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles etc. You can come only for your flight time or stay and watch others.
Who qualifies to go to State?
Right now, anyone who wants to attend State can. We will send out a survey to see if your archer is interested or not. We will use that to register archers for State when it's time to. State is like any other tournament, just bigger. Schools from the whole State are attending. It's such a cool feeling and environment.
What is 3D?
3D are animal targets that are set up at different distances. There are 6 animals in a set. Turkey, coyote, bear, deer, antelope, and ram; turkey is the closest distance of 10 meters and ram is at 15 meters. Archers will shoot at each animal one time. Once they score that animal they take their arrows and put them in the quivers of the next animal. We will practice at 3D practices.
How does one score?
Bullseye: Outside ring to inside, worth 1 to 10. If outside the rings or off bale it's a 0. If the arrow lands on the line they get to score up.
Archer shoots 5 arrows. Each arrow will be counted and added up to get a score. They shoot 3 times at 10 meters plus a practice round at the beginning with no score. Then they do the same for 15 meters. Grand total is their score that will be placed as results from all archers in their division and gender.
3D: they will shoot 5 arrows for each animal.
If their arrow is on the animal it's a 7, except the antlers. Then they have target rings on a vital organ that score from out to in, 8 to 10. They add scores for all arrows. Then move to the next animal. Grand total is their score that will be placed as results from all archers in their division and gender.
What does our registration fee pay for?
This is paid to Community Education at the beginning of the season, and is how you get on the team roster. In order from most to least of where it goes to. The fee goes towards paying for tournament fees, equipment (like arrows, nocks etc), pay to Community Education for their services, pay for any other expenses accrued and pay little to coaches for their time.
There are 5 tournaments that will be paid with this fee.
How do we sign up for practices?
On Team App there will be a “news” announcement that will have a link to Signup Genius. Passcode will also be shared in that announcement, this is for security purposes.
Where can I find our flight times?
Team App “news” announcement and in the “document” section, will have an attachment with archers flight times for each tournament. You can also look on NASPtournament.com a few days prior to the tournament.
